Hilltops, Huskies earn victories in weekend gamesFree Access

Last weekend was a productive one for the Saskatoon Hilltops and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, with both teams coming away with convincing victories over their Calgary opponents.

The Saskatoon Hilltops continued their dominant play,  moving to 3-0 with a 50-18 victory over the Calgary Colts at SMF Field on Sunday, August 27.

They jumped off to a quick start, leading 21-0 at the end of the first quarter on touchdowns by Boston Davidsen, Noah Flaman and Corbin Ebben.

The Toppers increased that lead to 40-0 in the second quarter on a field goal by Teijon Abel-Douglas, a Colt safety and touchdowns by Landon Thibault and Xavier Sabo. Calgary responded with a touchdown and field goal to make the score 43-10 at halftime.

A pair of field goals and a single point rounded out Saskatoon’s scoring while Calgary was able to get a late touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Saskatoon Hilltops now have a bye week, giving them extra time to prepare for their biggest test of the season when they travel to Mosaic Stadium to take on the Regina Thunder on Saturday, September 9. The provincial rivals always play each other tough. Mark 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30 on your calendar, as that is the Hilltops’ next home game for the rematch against Regina.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies kicked off the football season with a 48-6 win over the University of Calgary Dinos in a pre-season game played at Griffiths Stadium on Friday, August 25.

The Huskies scored five converted touchdowns, three field goals and two safeties in the lopsided victory. Martensville Royals alumni Cody Gutek scored the Huskies final touchdown.

Gutek is one of several players and coaches with local connections on the 2023 team. Others include: running back Brody Nelson (Martensville Royals), linebacker Connor Delaney (Martensville, Saskatoon Hilltops) offensive lineman Tristan Scott (Martensville Royals) defensive lineman Jaxon Funk (Hague, Saskatoon Hilltops) receiver Dawson Lennea (Martensville, Bishop James Mahoney Saints), Dan Houle (Hague) – running backs coach), Lyle Evansky (former Martensville Royals coach –  Offensive assistant-running backs/tight ends coach).

The Huskies start the regular season with a road game against the Manitoba Bisons on September 1. The first home game is on Friday, September 8 against the Regina Rams.
